The groom gives 13 gold coins (arras)to the bride. This tradition of some Hispanic weddings, which is popular in Spain, Panama and Mexico, demonstrates the groom’s ability to care for his new bride. The number of coins, which are blessed beforehand, is meant to represent Christ and his 12 disciples.
