7. Billy Elliot (2000) • Jaime Bell, Julie Walters
Okay, so we’ll be honest when we say that we love this film about dancers in part because it pushes the boundaries of social norms and gender identification. This young boy wants to take ballet classes and he’s actually talented but he’s all wrapped up in family drama and fighting the stigma that comes from defying the ‘rules’ of gender stereotypes. We applaud the writer (Lee Hall) as well as the dance in the film as we both laugh and cry our way through it every time.
