The Mary Rose sank because it was overloaded with cannons. Classic Henry VIII move. Too many guns, not enough stability.
The coin’s design shows those very cannons. It’s a floating disaster on a piece of metal. That’s hilarious.
Fun fact: The coin was released to mark the 40th anniversary of the ship’s raising. The design was created by a naval artist named John Bergdahl.
He also designed the coat of arms for the Falkland Islands. So, the guy knows boats.
The “Error” coins that are even weirder
Coin collectors love mistakes. And the Mary Rose coin has some doozies.
Look for a coin where the writing on the edge is upside down. That’s called a “rotated die” error.
Or check if the ship has a weird blurry patch. Some coins were struck with too much pressure. These errors can bump the value to over £100.
Because nothing says “valuable” like a blurry boat that sunk.
