You’ve probably heard that famous speech. It’s basically Hamlet asking himself, “Is fighting for justice worth the pain?” Imagine if you had to decide whether to expose a family secret or just stay quiet.
To test if the ghost is telling the truth, Hamlet fakes being crazy. He acts all weird and rude at court. It’s like he’s wearing a mask of madness to see who flinches first.
He also hires some actors to perform a play that recreates the murder exactly as the ghost described. He watches Claudius’s reaction like a hawk. When Claudius storms out, Hamlet knows: the uncle is guilty.

Where Everything Goes Wild
This isn’t a clean revenge story. Hamlet has a huge chance to kill Claudius while he’s praying, but he hesitates. Why? He doesn’t want Claudius to go to heaven by dying in a state of confession. Talk about overthinking!
Then, in a terrible accident, Hamlet kills the wrong guy: Polonius, the king’s advisor. Polonius was spying behind a curtain. Oops. That mistake sets off a domino effect of tragedy.
Polonius’s daughter, Ophelia, whom Hamlet sort-of-loved, goes mad with grief. She drowns in a river, singing sad songs. It’s heartbreaking, and it makes you wonder: did Hamlet’s coldness push her over the edge?
