Pharmacies, petrol stations, and some restaurants often stay open. So if you need medicine or a bacon butty, you’ll survive. But don’t expect a fancy department store to be open. They’re like that one friend who never replies to group invites—silent and absent.
In many European countries, like Germany or France, Easter Sunday is a public holiday. Nearly everything closes. Imagine driving around like a lost penguin in a snowstorm. You learn quickly to stock up on Friday.
In Australia, it’s similar—shops in major cities may open, but smaller towns go dark. It’s a beautiful reminder that not everything revolves around commerce. Sometimes, we’re supposed to just chill.

How to Avoid the Easter Sunday Panic
Here’s a little life hack: make a checklist on Saturday. Eggs? Check. Bread? Check. Butter for the roast? Double-check. It takes five minutes and saves you from a heart-sinking moment at a locked door.
Another tip: call ahead or check Google Maps. I know, I know—it’s boring. But it’s better than standing outside a closed shop like a statue of disappointment. Your Easter Sunday should be about chocolate and laughter, not frustration.
And if you do forget something, just lean into the chaos. Invite the neighbor over. Share what you have. Suddenly, the missing milk becomes a funny story for next year. That’s the real spirit of Easter.
