First, know your location. If you’re in the UK, strap in. Easter Sunday is a trading restriction day. That’s a fancy law that basically says: “No, you cannot buy a new toaster today.”
Most big supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda? Closed. Completely. Not even a sneaky 9 AM run for hot cross buns. You’ll find their parking lots emptier than a politician’s promise.
But wait—there’s a loophole. Convenience stores? They can open. So, if you’re desperate for milk or a bag of crisps, the local Co-op or a corner shop might save your bacon. Literally.
What About the US?
America handles this differently, because of course it does. There’s no national law. It’s a state-by-state, store-by-store free-for-all.
Many big box stores like Walmart? They’re open. Target? Usually open, but with reduced hours. You might get there at 8 AM, only to find they don’t unlock the doors until 10. It’s like they’re actively testing your patience.
But here’s the kicker: Easter Sunday is a HUGE shopping day for last-minute candy, plastic grass, and those weird marshmallow Peeps. So trust me, stores want your money. They just don’t want to look greedy about it.
Smaller shops, especially indie bookstores or local bakeries? They’re a mixed bag. Some close out of tradition. Others stay open because, hey, rent doesn’t take holidays off. Check their Instagram before you drive across town. You’ve been warned.
