When you hear reports about military operations or aid deliveries in Gaza City, this tiny size is the whole story. You can’t just “contain” something in a 4-by-4 mile box with that many people.
A bomb doesn’t land in “one part” that’s far from everyone. Everything is close to everyone. Your neighbor’s kitchen is practically your kitchen.
This also means a walk from one end to the other takes, what, two hours? Maybe three if you stop for a sandwich (not that you can get one easily right now). It’s a walking town. A very crowded, very pressured walking town.

Gaza City isn’t just naturally compact. It’s also surrounded. On three sides, you have the border fence with Israel. On the fourth, the Mediterranean Sea.
And the sea? It’s mostly blocked by an Israeli naval blockade. So, imagine being in a tiny room, but the door is locked, and the window is barred. That’s the feeling.
