The pound is one of the oldest currencies in the world, still in use after 1,200 years. Imagine carrying something that connects you to kings, queens, and medieval merchants!
And here’s the twist: Scotland and Northern Ireland print their own banknotes that look totally different, even though they’re still pounds. It’s like a secret code—show a Scottish five-pound note in London, and you might get a double-take!
The Coins Are a Little Mad (In the Best Way)
You’ll find coins for 1p (a penny), 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, and £2. Yes, that’s seven different shapes and sizes in your pocket!
The best part? The £1 coin is thick and gold-colored, while the £2 coin has two colors—silver in the middle and gold on the edge. It’s like a puzzle every time you pay for a bus ticket. Don’t panic; just enjoy the game!
Pro tip: The 50p coin is actually a heptagon (seven sides). How cool is that? You can tell your friends you’re holding a piece of geometric art.
