Let’s get real. A decent whole house system (installed) runs $2,500 to $6,000. That’s the sweet spot for most homes. High-end systems? $8,000 to $12,000.
Yes, that’s a big range. But ask yourself: do you have two bathrooms or six? Do you have city water or a well? Well water is usually pricier because it’s dirtier (literally).
And location matters. Plumbers in big cities charge more. A guy in rural Iowa might install it for a handshake and a pie. (Okay, maybe not, but you get the idea.)
Should you DIY?
If you’re handy, you can save a ton. A basic system you install yourself might cost $700 to $1,200. But if you mess up a pipe connection, you could flood your basement. Is that worth the risk?
I’m not here to judge. I’ve done stupid things with tools. Just know that pro installation includes warranty support. If it breaks, you call someone. That peace of mind is worth something.
But if you’re broke and brave? YouTube is your friend. And a bucket. Always have a bucket.
