With summer here, it’s high time to get our beach reading in order. Since paper and water don’t mix (unless you’re at an origami conference being held in Cabos or something), audiobooks are a great way to bring reading on vacation.

Audiobooks were thought to be “cheating” when it came to reading, but our busy and tech-savvy lives have made audiobooks a legitimate and convenient vehicle for literature and book club offerings. For commuting, for lying by the pool or for blocking out the kids on the drive to and from the beach, listen up, because audiobooks might just be the way to go.

1. You can survive the drive.
The average American spends 100 minutes a day commuting. More of us drive to work than commute via public transport, keeping our hands and eyes (the main body parts needed for reading) occupied. We can all agree driving and reading are two actions that don’t go together, right? Instead, plug in an audio book on the MP3 or Disc player and “read” the summer’s hottest bestseller. Besides, audiobooks let you do something besides curse the traffic.
