Artificial intelligence was present in Google products long before the company’s 25th anniversary. Search ranking, spam detection, speech recognition, translation, image analysis and recommendations all rely on machine-learning systems to varying degrees.

Google DeepMind, formed after Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, became an important centre for advanced AI research. Its systems achieved notable results in areas such as games, protein structure prediction and scientific problem-solving. Google Research also contributed to modern AI through work on language, computer vision and neural networks.

A 2017 research paper by Google researchers introduced the Transformer architecture, a technical approach that later became central to many large language models. The work helped accelerate advances in systems capable of processing and generating text, images and other forms of media.

By 2023, Google faced intense competition from companies developing generative AI tools. It introduced Bard, a conversational AI service, and continued integrating AI features into Search and other products. The company also announced Gemini, a family of AI models, later in 2023, as it adjusted its product strategy around the rapidly changing technology.

AI creates opportunities and risks for Google. Better systems may improve search answers, translation, accessibility and productivity. At the same time, generative tools can produce inaccurate statements, reproduce bias or make it harder for users to identify original sources. Google’s challenge is to improve usefulness while preserving trust in information.
