These shops were a miracle of modern economics. Five pounds bought you a DVD of a movie you’d never heard of. Five pounds bought you a board game with instructions in six languages and no recognizable rules.
You could buy a drone that flew for exactly 47 seconds. You could buy a perfume called “Paris Night” that smelled more like “Carpet Shampoo.” It was glorious.
The mystery was half the fun. Was that a back massager or a weird kitchen gadget? Yes. Every shelf was a gamble.
Then, the Cracks Appeared
Rents went up. Shipping costs exploded. The 5-pound price point became a prison. Suddenly, a single plastic unicorn horn hat cost more to ship than it could ever sell for.
The business model that worked in 2010 started choking in 2018. The “everything” part of the name became a burden. You can’t sell a real toaster for 5 pounds if the toaster costs 4 pounds to make.
First, the quality got hilariously bad. You’d buy a torch, and it would work for exactly one flicker. Then it would die, laughing at your hope.
