  1. Postpartum Depression

According to statistics, a whopping 85 percent of new moms feel some sadness and irritability after their baby is born -but for up to 16 percent of women, that sadness is serious enough to be diagnosable. Unlike the “baby blues”, postpartum depression is a more serious problem – one that you shouldn’t ignore. Although postpartum and the baby blues share many symptoms (including mood swings, crying jags, sadness, insomnia, and irritability) experts say the symptoms are more severe with postpartum depression. “A lot of moms have intrusive thoughts …about hurting their baby, choking their baby,” explains Lynne McIntyre, PSI’s mid-Atlantic coordinator.
