NAME CHANGING: FORWARD THINKING IDEAS

While much less common, there are some egalitarian ways to change one’s name! While maybe not practical, perhaps both wife and husband could change their names when they get married, which is exactly what Jay-Z and Beyonce did; legally, they are Sean Knowles-Carter and Beyonce Knowles-Carter. (This works because it’s three syllables, of course it would be much harder with longer last names!) When I found out that Los Angeles’ mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa had changed his name to reflect his and his (now ex) wife’s name, I thought that was pretty cool and forward thinking.

This is really interesting to me, as I wrestled with the same decision myself. I’d been Elizabeth Heath for 43 years when I married, so I was reluctant to give up my name! As it turned out, the decision was made for me – I married an Italian in Italy, and women here keep their birth names…mostly because it’s easier for documents. Problem solved!

Yes! I think for documentation purposes it is so much easier. When i got my Italian passport (citizenship through paternal lineage) they automatically put my maiden name. Honestly if everyne kept their name that would be easier, LOL
