The feeling of not looking, talking, or relating to anyone around me gave me the deep need to belong, more than anything, especially as I was just becoming a teenager. There weren’t many Latinos in my neighborhood or where I went to school, so I threw myself into friendships with the Black kids. I changed the way I spoke and the way I acted, all to fit in.
