Put it together: stýri + borð = starboard. So the right side became the “steering board” side. Genius, right?
But here’s the twist. When you docked, you parked your left side against the pier. Why? To protect that precious steering oar on the right.
That left side got a name, too: “larboard” (loading board). It sounds like a lost cousin of “starboard.” Total confusion followed.
A Nightmare for Sailors
“Larboard” and “starboard” sound dangerously alike. Shouts of “Hard to larboard!” led to many splintered hulls. It was a phonetic disaster.
So the British Navy finally swapped “larboard” for “port” in the 1800s. Because ships bring cargo to port on their left side. Problem solved.
