Labor Day, the last hurrah of summer and the unofficial start of fall fashion season. As your fashion fantasies turn from sandals, bikinis, and sundresses to trousers, jackets, and comfy sweaters you no longer need to rule out white from your fall wardrobe palette. Bright white is always chic with summer pastels and citrusy neons, but crisp shades of ivory and bone are also a perfect complement to fall’s earthy colors and vibrant jewel tones.

In this era of mixing prints, mixing metals, and sporting socks with open-toed platforms, the old ‘Never wear white after Labor Day’ rule is outdated.  Here are few easy ways to transition seamlessly from summer to fall, wearing white.

White Shoes—A smart pair of brogues in bone pair up well with trousers at the office or with tights and a mini for a casual evening. If you’re feeling especially sassy, keep those chunky platform sandals in rotation for a few more months by pairing them with white ankle socks or tights.

Snowy Textures—Summery shades in unexpectedly cozy textiles like wool or suede add a brilliantly modern twist to a classic style. Angelina Jolie broke all the fashion rules and absolutely glowed in the white angora Atelier Versace gown she wore to the NYC premiere of The Tourist in 2010.

Alabaster Accessories—Revive last year’s LBD and accentuate your waist with a narrow ivory belt. Or play up your complexion with a bold white statement necklace or pearly chandelier earrings.

Creamy Trench—A lightweight, creamy white trench is the ultimate transitional outerwear. It’s timeless, practical, and literally goes with everything.

Chalk-White Blouse—A beautifully tailored, crisp white blouse is a pan-seasonal wardrobe essential. On those last sultry summer days, a pretty blouse tucked into a sleek pencil skirt exudes breezy sophistication. As the temperatures drop, it adds a touch of ladylike charm worn with jeans and a jacket.
