5. Find a mentor.
In 1965, Johnny Carson gave Joan her big break on the Tonight Show. Joan Rivers told People, “Johnny was the one person who said, ‘Yes, she has talent; yes, she is funny.’ He was the first person in power who respected what I was doing and realized what I could become. He handed me my career.”

6. Don’t be afraid to fill someone else’s shoes.
After guest hosting The Tonight Show over 80 times, she was made the show’s permanent guest host in 1983.

7. It’s ok to multitask.
Joan Rivers’ life had many facets. She was a talk show host, stand up comedian, author, TV writer, star of her own reality show, Joan & Melissa and had a successful QVC jewelry line. Not to mention mom and grandma. If Joan can do it, so can we. Maybe not with the same panache, but her life serves as a reminder that it’s not only okay, but very possible to successfully multitask.
