In 2015, Google announced a new corporate structure under a parent company called Alphabet. Google became Alphabet’s largest business, while projects such as life sciences and advanced technology ventures could operate in separate units.
Sundar Pichai became Google’s chief executive in 2015 and later became Alphabet’s CEO in 2019. Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped back from their executive roles in 2019, though they remained involved as members of Alphabet’s board at that time.
The restructuring reflected the company’s size and the range of activities associated with its brand. Search, advertising, Android, YouTube, Maps and cloud services remained closely linked to Google, while other ventures could be evaluated independently.
