Rejoice! September 12 is National Chocolate Milkshake Day. The first chocolate milkshake was created in Chicago in 1922, by Walgreens soda fountain savant Ivar ‘Pop’ Coulson, when he added two scoops of vanilla ice cream to the store’s popular concoction of soda water, chocolate syrup and malt powder. The venerable shake has come a long way since then, served with or without malt and with the addition of many different flavors of ice cream, syrups and toppings. And in our health-conscious times, you can even find a healthy chocolate milkshake.

In the words of the lovely and talented Kelis, “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, And they’re like It’s better than yours…” We here at Mamiverse are fairly sure that Kelis isn’t talking about a chocolate milkshake, but one thing is for certain—these healthy shakes will make all of the boys (and girls, too) come running quickly!

1. Chocolate Cake-Batter Shake
This healthy chocolate milkshake is a delicious alternative to the fattening original and it’s sugar free! The recipe includes cocoa or protein powder, a large frozen banana, coconut or almond milk (or use regular milk), coconut butter, and some sprinkles.

2. Skinny Mint Chocolate Milkshakes
This recipe is great because it allows for a lot of variation. Start with three very ripe, small frozen bananas. Blend with milk or almond milk, your favorite flavor of yogurt, cocoa powder and a tiny amount of mint extract (be careful!). Add spinach (yes, spinach), if desired. Top with shaved chocolate and a sprig of fresh mint. Healthy shakes just got really interesting!
