The implications for saving lives and providing quality of life is huge. Chronic diarrhea is deadly; think dehydration and malnutrition. Particularly in emerging nations where safe water is not a given, intestinal diseases take hundreds of lives daily. Children and the elderly are most affected by chronic bowel disease. Transplants could save lives.
