As a working mom with a million responsibilities to tackle daily, is your sex drive at an all-time low? There may be a little pink pill that that can help—something that some are calling Viagra for women. As the Washington Post reports, Flibanserin was approved by the FDA in August 2015 to treat premenopausal women with low sexual desire. While men already have 26 government-approved drugs for sexual dysfunction, for women, this is the first drug ever available on the market (incredible, huh?). Nicknamed the “female Viagra” or “pink Viagra” it will be sold under the brand name Addyi to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), which is essentially a lack of libido that affects between 5.5 million and 8.6 million women in the U.S. So, should you run out and get it?

We’re not too sure. First, it shouldn’t be compared to Viagra, which helps men’s sexual performance treating erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow to their genitals. Flibanserin, in comparison, was developed as an anti-depressant and boosts sexual desire by balancing chemicals in women’s brain. HSD is defined by the FDA as “low sexual desire that causes marked distress or interpersonal difficulty and is not due to a co-existing medical or psychiatric condition, problems within the relationship, or the effects of a medication or other drug substance.” Still think this is for you? Probably not.

Psychologists say the women’s lower sex drives, in comparison to men’s lustier ones, are only natural. And a total lack of libido usually has to do with mental troubles (anxiety, depression, mood disorders, etc.) or feeling unattractive physically and never exercising or going to the gym.  But most importantly it’s about the doldrums of long-term relationships.  Somewhere between one and four years into a relationship, women’s desire tends to decline. In an interview with Forbes magazine, Dr. Karen E. Adams, clinical professor of OBGYN and Director of the Midlife Women’s Clinic at Oregon Health and Science University, advised against not using Flibanserin.  “When I see a woman who says, ‘I love my partner, but I’m just kind of not into having sex anymore,’ that’s something we have to explore. We have to start thinking about effort and intention. What are they doing to prioritize sex in their relationship? A lot of this needs to be addressed in individual or couples psychotherapy. It’s really inappropriate to start with a pill,” advised Adams.

Then there are the physical side effects and restrictions to consider for using this drug. One of its most significant drawbacks is that you cannot drink alcohol while taking Addyi. That means total abstinence from alcohol. (Wasn’t the Cosmopolitan the ‘pink Viagra’ in a martini glass for the entire Sex and the City cast?)  And, unlike Viagra for men, that can be taken just an hour before they put on a Barry White album for business time, Flibanserin is designed to be taken daily, regularly, and starting months beforehand; not just when you want to want sex. And in comparison to Viagra which has very effective results according to users, Flibanserin users say that the results are just “modest.” Wait, it gets worse, there are also side effects such as nausea, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth and fainting.

We don’t know about you but this whole Viagra for women concept gets un-sexier by the second. If you don’t suffer from HSD, desiring to have sex with your partner is about how much mental and physical energy you invest toward it. Try getting into that erotic headspace by leaving the demands of your life on hold for just fifteen minutes for a roll in the hay because sex should be about adult play.
