Evidence of cacao being made into a drink was found in New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon dating back to between 1000 and 1125 A.D.

4. Chocolate has been counterfeited.
In the Aztec culture, cacao was so coveted that it was often counterfeited. People would hollow out old, empty pods and fill them with dirt to be used for trade. They’d try to pass them off as newly harvested.
