Let’s be real: if you ask a true Londoner where Enfield is, they’ll wave vaguely north and say, “It’s London, mate.” And they’re not wrong. Since 1965, Enfield has been a borough of Greater London, rubbing shoulders with places like Barnet and Haringey. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find the old soul of Enfield still belongs to Middlesex—a county that technically doesn’t exist anymore for government purposes. It’s a bit like wearing a jumper that’s been passed down; the label says one thing, but the warmth feels like home.
I once met a bloke in a café in Enfield who insisted his address was “Enfield, Middlesex” even though Royal Mail would send it to “London.” He winked and said, “Middlesex is for the heart, London’s just for the postman.” That’s the charm of it—people care about this stuff, even if it’s confusing. So, when someone asks “What county is Enfield in?”, the honest, warm answer is: Middlesex for history, Greater London for today.
Why Should You Care?
You might be thinking, “Okay, but I don’t live there—why does this matter to me?” Fair point, but hear me out. Knowing the county of Enfield is like knowing the secret ingredient in a great sandwich; it gives you a sense of place and story. If you’re moving there, that county tag affects council tax, school catchments, and even your rubbish collection schedule. Imagine turning up on bin day only to find out you’re in the wrong collection zone—a proper Monday morning disaster.
And for the everyday reader who just likes a bit of trivia? This is gold for pub quizzes or banter with your mates. You can casually drop, “Did you know Enfield is in Middlesex, but it’s also London?” and watch their eyebrows shoot up. It’s a neat little social trick, like knowing the history of your local park bench. Plus, Enfield itself is a cracking place—it’s where the Enfield 8000 electric car was born (yes, a proper British EV before Elon was a twinkle), and it has the gorgeous Trent Park where you can walk off a Sunday roast.
