Google’s 25-year history is also a history of expansion. Google Maps, introduced in 2005, changed how people searched for places, planned journeys and evaluated local businesses. Its mapping data supports directions, public transport information, satellite imagery and location-based services.

The company acquired YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion in stock. At the time, online video was still developing, but YouTube became one of the largest video platforms in the world. Its growth broadened Google’s reach from written search results to entertainment, education, live events and creator-led media.

Google Docs, Gmail and Google Drive helped establish a cloud-based approach to productivity. Files could be accessed from multiple devices, while teams could edit documents and spreadsheets together. These services later became part of Google Workspace, which competes with Microsoft 365 and other business software.

Android gave Google another important route to users. Google joined the Open Handset Alliance in 2007, and the first Android-powered phone reached the market in 2008. The mobile operating system became widely used by phone manufacturers around the world, placing Google Search, Maps, YouTube and the Play Store on billions of devices.

Google Chrome, released in 2008, strengthened the company’s position in the browser market. A browser is more than a way to visit websites: it is a gateway to search, web applications, advertising and online identity. Chrome’s success gave Google greater influence over the technologies used to deliver modern websites.
