Now, the toothed whales—like sperm whales and orcas—are a different story. They have bigger throats and can swallow things much larger than krill. Sperm whales are famous for battling giant squid, which are basically living noodles the size of a school bus.
But here’s the kicker: sperm whales have throats big enough to swallow a human, if they wanted to. But they don’t. Their diet is squid, fish, and deep-sea mystery meat—not floating land-monkeys in swim trunks.
And orcas? They’re apex predators with teeth like steak knives. They’ve been known to eat seals, sea lions, and even other whales. But attacks on humans in the wild? Almost zero. They seem to think we taste like disappointment.
The One Famous Exception (That’s Probably a Myth)
You’ve probably heard the story of a sperm whale that “swallowed” a sailor in the 19th century. There’s a tale about a whaler named James Bartley who supposedly ended up inside a whale for 15 hours. He survived, but his skin was bleached white.
Can A Whale Swallow a Human? | Whale Facts
Sounds wild, right? Most historians think this story is total baloney. It’s like the whale version of a campfire tale—fun to tell, but not a single shred of proof exists.
So unless you’re a piece of plastic floating in the ocean, you’re probably not on the menu. Whales are gentle giants—they’d rather hang out and sing songs than eat you.
