From the moment one picks up Gracias/Thanks, it becomes evident that this is a joyful story. The vibrant cover illustrations and opening pages offer a peek into the many wonderful things the book will celebrate—music, books, bugs, and more! The book is exactly what its title implies: a story of giving thanks—told through poetic, humorous text that masterfully captures a child’s spirit. Giving thanks is fun! Even the mundane is worth celebrating with gratitude; after all, without the sun, we might all “sleep for years and years and grow a long white beard!”

Gracias/Thanks received a 2010 Pura Belpré Honor for its cheerful illustrations, which perfectly match the liveliness of the text. This bilingual book is a wonderful choice to share with children during the coming holidays, and makes an excellent gift. It could easily become a family favorite for bedtime or anytime, and help all to reflect on the many reasons we have for being thankful each day. There is a short author’s note at the end where the author shares some of the things that she is personally grateful for, and asks readers to keep the circle of thanks growing. Gracias/Thanks is highly recommended for all families.
