So, why is it taking so long? Because big stuff is hard. And because we keep trying to do it perfectly. HS2 has to be faster, quieter, and greener than any railway before. It has to save the newts, respect the Romans, and not annoy the bats. That’s a tall order.
But honestly? It’s a bit of a mess. And that’s why it’s fun. It reminds us that humans can dream big, but we can’t always walk a straight line. Sometimes, we find a Roman skeleton, shrug, and call it a day. That is the true spirit of HS2.
Will I ever ride it? I hope so. I’ll bring my grandkids. And a bat helmet.
