After their final mission, the crew of the Memphis Belle was treated like rockstars, with parades and politicians clamoring to meet them. They even got to meet the President himself, Franklin D. Roosevelt! But, as the war effort continued, the crew members went their separate ways, each returning to civilian life with their own unique stories to tell.
One of the most interesting stories is that of Captain Robert Morgan, who went on to serve in the Korean War and even got to fly the Memphis Belle's successor, the B-29. Meanwhile, his co-pilot, Jim Verinis, became a successful businessman and even started his own airline. And, get this, the crew's navigator, Vincent Evans, went on to become a math teacher - who knew navigating through treacherous skies would prepare him for navigating through algebra?
As for the Memphis Belle herself, she was eventually retired and put on display in Memphis, Tennessee, where she remained for over 40 years. But, in the 1980s, a group of dedicated restorers set out to bring her back to her former glory, and, in 2018, she was finally restored to her original Specifications. Today, you can visit the Memphis Belle at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio, where she remains an iconic symbol of American determination.
