Farming and fishing were also significant economic activities in the New England colonies. Imagine having a backyard garden, but instead of growing vegetables for your family, you're cultivating crops to feed an entire community. That's what these colonial farmers did, and their harvests helped sustain the local population. Meanwhile, the abundance of fish in the waters off New England made fishing a lucrative industry.
Just as we have our favorite restaurants serving up fresh seafood, the New England colonies had their own fishing industry that supplied salted cod and other delicacies to the rest of the colonies and even Europe. This export-oriented approach helped the colonies thrive economically, much like how our favorite local eateries contribute to the neighborhood's charm and prosperity.
