A scar is essentially a patch of new skin that forms over a wound, burn, or cut, as a way to protect the damaged area and promote healing. But, have you ever stopped to think about what actually causes a scar to form in the first place? It's pretty cool, and totally worth learning about!
When our skin gets injured, our body's first response is to send in the troops – aka, white blood cells – to fight off any potential infections and start the healing process. As the wound starts to close, our skin begins to produce collagen, a type of protein that helps to strengthen and support the new skin. And, voilà! A scar is born!
