Here’s where it gets good. The Grand Arcade is a crossroads. It’s where the tourists who just punted on the Cam mix with the professors who just solved a math problem. You’ll see a student with a nose ring buying a smoothie next to an elegant woman in a trench coat buying a gold necklace. It’s all very... Cambridge.
Sit on one of those stone steps by the escalators. Just watch for five minutes. You’ll see a toddler having a meltdown over a balloon, a couple arguing about which coffee shop to choose, and a very serious man talking very loudly on his phone about “synergy.” It’s a live theatre, and the admission is free.
The escalators themselves are a journey. They take you up, up, up into different levels of spending. The top floor feels more relaxed, full of eateries and a view. The bottom floor? That’s where the beauty counters are. Beware: you will be sprayed with perfume. It’s inevitable.
The Food: From Quick Bite to “Treat Yourself”
Let’s talk fuel. You can’t shop on an empty stomach. The Grand Arcade has a whole upper level dedicated to food. It’s called the Dining Terrace, and it’s a glorious place of choice. You can grab a quick sushi roll or sit down for a proper pizza.
There’s a Wagamama there, perfect for a bowl of slurpy noodles while you regret your receipt total. Or try the amazing ramen place—you know the one. The queues are always long, which means it’s good. Or it means everyone is just as indecisive as you are.
Walks round Cambridge
My favorite, though, is the little kiosk that sells crêpes. Yes, a €12 crêpe. But it has Nutella and strawberries and a little bit of shame. It’s the perfect way to end a successful (or emotionally draining) shopping trip. Calories don’t count when you’re holding shopping bags, right? That’s a scientific fact. Probably.
