Surbiton has a riverfront. The River Thames flows right through it, and locals act like it’s a spiritual experience. It’s nice, sure, but it’s also brown and full of swans that will absolutely hiss at you if you don’t have bread. The riverside path is great for jogging, but only if you enjoy dodging toddlers and electric scooters while pretending to enjoy the “natural beauty.”
Fun fact: the area was once home to actual celebrities. The Rolling Stones lived near here in the 1960s, and I’m convinced their spirit remains—specifically the spirit of Keith Richards, judging by the amount of elderly gentlemen wearing leather jackets in the Co-op. They look cool, but they’re buying cat food and prune juice. It’s very rock ‘n’ roll, just with more napkins.
The Shops: Quirky or Just Expensive?
The high street is a Goldilocks zone of retail. You’ve got your standard Boots and Waitrose, but also a shop that sells only handmade candles that smell like “gentle rain in Surrey.” That candle costs £32. For the same price, you could buy a sandwich, a train ticket, and a small apology card for your neighbor.
There’s also a antique shop run by a woman who looks like she’s been there since the Victorian era. She’ll sell you a chipped teacup for £70 and call it “vintage patina.” It’s a chip, Margaret. But you’ll buy it because you want to feel fancy. The charm is real, but so is the mild financial regret.
