Walk around your room and find the perfect wall. It should be between studs—that’s the gap in the framing. Use your stud finder and mark the edges with a pencil, like you’re mapping treasure. Your AC will sit in that gap, so measure the sleeve width carefully.
Make sure there are no electrical wires or pipes hidden inside the wall. Use that voltage tester and tap gently on the wall. If you hit a live wire, you’ll know it. (Spoiler: don’t hit a live wire.) If you’re unsure, call a handyman—pride isn’t worth a shock.
Also, pick a spot that’s level. If your wall is crooked, your AC will look like it’s shrugging at you forever. Use a level to draw a perfectly horizontal line for the bottom of your cutout.
