Here’s where it gets juicy. If you’re staying within Zones 1–3, a Travelcard is pure overkill. A daily cap on contactless for Zones 1–3 is about £9.60 peak. That’s almost half the price of the Zone 6 version. So unless you’re commuting from Zone 6 (like poor souls in Croydon or Romford), stick to the smaller zones.
But if you are one of those brave souls—let’s say you live in Zone 6 and work near Oxford Circus—the Travelcard is a no-brainer. You’ll hit the cap every single day anyway. And with the weekly card, you skip the morning anxiety of watching your balance drain. Peace of mind costs £74.70.
What about buses and trams?
This is the sneaky advantage. A Zone 1–6 Travelcard includes unlimited bus and tram travel. No cap, no limits, just hop on and off like a drunk hummingbird. If you’re planning to bus-hop across the city (say, from Brixton to Camden to Stratford), that alone can replace a day’s worth of tube fares. Word of caution: buses are slow, but they’re also cheap. The Travelcard makes them free.
