Forty shows up everywhere in ancient stories, and it’s almost always about testing or transformation. Remember Noah’s ark? It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Moses hung out on Mount Sinai for 40 days before getting the Ten Commandments.
And of course, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness, fasting and resisting temptation. That’s the direct inspiration for Lent. So when people give up chocolate or social media for Lent, they’re essentially doing a mini-version of that desert survival challenge.
It’s a neat little echo: 40 days to reset, reflect, or just prove you can live without your morning latte. Could you do it?
Counting Sundays: The Fun Math
Here’s the breakdown real quick. Ash Wednesday kicks things off, and Easter Sunday is the finish line. If you mark every single day on a calendar between those two, you get 46 days.

But since Sundays are considered “mini Easters” (a day of celebration, not fasting), Christians traditionally skip them from the Lenten count. That means six Sundays get chopped off, leaving you with the classic 40 days.
It’s like if you were on a diet but allowed yourself guilt-free pizza every Sunday. Suddenly, 40 days sounds a lot more doable, right?
