First, check the crown. A genuine K2 has a royal cipher on the door. It might say “ERII” or “GVR.” That’s the Queen or King George. No crown? It’s a cheaper reproduction. Don’t be fooled.
Second, ask about the glass. Original boxes use toughened, curved panes. Replacing one costs hundreds. Make sure it’s all intact. You don’t want a broken window in your £4,000 shed.
Third, inspect the cast iron for rust. Surface rust is fine. Deep holes are a nightmare. You’ll be patching with filler and swearing a lot. Pay for a well-restored one.

Where to find one for sale
eBay is your first stop. Type “red phone box” and brace yourself. You’ll see listings from garden centers and retro dealers. Prices range from “bargain” to “are you mad?”
Check BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme. They sell off old boxes to communities. But you must be a parish council or charity. If you fake it, you’ll get in trouble. So find a friend in a village hall.
Local auction houses sometimes have them. They pop up after an old phone exchange closes. You can win one for £200 if nobody else bids. Then you have to explain to your spouse why you bought a giant red box. Good luck with that conversation.
