Rodney Trotter is everywhere and nowhere. He’s frozen in time as a 1980s relic, yet his spirit lives on every time someone calls a friend a “plonker” after a silly mistake. Nicholas Lyndhurst might be off playing serious roles, but to us, he’ll always be the kid who accidentally said “Cushty” too loudly in a posh restaurant.
And you know what? That’s fine. We don’t need new episodes. We just need to know that somewhere, in a parallel universe, Rodney is still driving that Reliant Regal, still getting conned by his brother, and still being the lovable loser we all secretly root for. Because deep down, aren’t we all just a bit Rodney? (Don’t answer that. Just smile and nod.)
So next time you watch an old clip and hear Del say “This time next year, we’ll be millionaires,” remember: Rodney knew it was nonsense. But he went along with it anyway. That’s hope. That’s faith. That’s our plonker. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
