But wait—there’s more. Whittingham’s base salary is one thing, but the dude stacks bonuses like a kid stacking LEGOs. He gets an extra $100,000 for winning the Pac-12 championship. Another $50,000 if the team makes a New Year’s Six bowl. And a cool $250,000 if they crash the College Football Playoff (which hasn’t happened yet, but hey, a guy can dream).
Then there’s the car allowance, the country club membership (yes, really), and a personal seat license for football games. Imagine getting paid to watch your own team play. That’s the life.

Plus, he gets a $2 million retention bonus if he’s still there in 2027. Spoiler: he probably will be. The man bleeds crimson, and Utah would need a wrecking ball to pry him out.
How Does It Compare to His Players?
Here’s where the irony kicks in. Whittingham’s annual salary is more than what most of his players will earn in their entire college careers. And those guys are the ones getting hit. But in the era of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness deals), some star players at the Utes are now pulling in six figures too. It’s a weird new world where a quarterback can be richer than a coach’s assistant.
Still, Whittingham’s $6 million dwarfs any single NIL deal at Utah. He’s the big dog on campus, and honestly, he’s earned it. The guy built a program from the ground up, and his salary is the trophy for that grind.
