Here’s where it gets deliciously confusing. You don’t need a TV License if you only watch catch-up services like BBC iPlayer for on-demand stuff? Actually, hold on—you do need one if you watch or record any live TV on any channel, or if you use BBC iPlayer at all. Yes, even that one episode of Doctor Who you watched on your phone while waiting for the bus. It counts.
Imagine you’re having a cosy night in—blanket, cat on your lap, a box set queued up. If you’re watching live Strictly Come Dancing on your tablet via the BBC app, you’re technically breaking the law if you don’t have a license. It’s like going to the supermarket, grabbing a grape to test for sweetness, and suddenly being charged for the whole bunch—but with a courtroom attached.
Now, if you only use streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+ and never, ever watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer, you’re in the clear. No fine. You can sleep soundly, knowing your Netflix binges are perfectly legal. But the moment you accidentally tune into a live news feed on YouTube? Bam. You’ve entered the gray zone.
The real-life story of Gary from down the road
Take Gary, for example. Gary is a lovely bloke who thought he’d “save a bit of cash” by cancelling his TV License because he only watched The Crown on Netflix. What he didn’t realise was that his eight-year-old daughter, Ella, had been watching live children’s programmes on the BBC website on her school laptop. You guessed it—letter from TV Licensing arrived.
Gary had to pay the £1,000 fine, plus back-license fees. He told me, “I thought I was being clever, but I ended up paying for a family holiday to Blackpool that never happened.” We all love Gary, but we don’t want to be Gary.
