Legally, this is a bit of a grey area in the UK. Technically, you’re not supposed to use a “plug-in” solar system without notifying your Distribution Network Operator (DNO)—that’s the regional power company. But here’s the wink-wink, nudge-nudge part: most small systems (under 600 watts) are treated as “appliances” because they don’t back-feed enough power to destabilise the grid. Many people install them without a peep. Just check your warranty and your home insurance policy first—because if something goes wrong, you’ll want cover that doesn’t involve a four-hour phone hold with “Kevin” from customer service.
Another note: you absolutely cannot plug these into a power strip or extension cord. They overheat easily. Use a dedicated wall socket—ideally one protected by a Type A RCD (Residual Current Device). It’s boring advice, I know, but I’d rather you read this than accidentally turn your kitchen into a solar-powered BBQ.
Which brands are actually worth your cash?
The UK market is suddenly full of options that aren’t just “mystery boxes from Amazon”. EcoFlow makes a neat 400W portable panel that folds like a cardboard box; Renogy has a robust 200W kit with a micro-inverter built into the cable; and BigBattery (no, that’s the actual name) does a slick 800W setup if you want to go big without going roof-mounted. Prices hover between £250 and £800, depending on wattage and brand. Pro tip: look for “UKCA” or “CE” certification stamps—otherwise you’re buying a fire hazard with a free USB port.

And if you’re renting? This is your golden ticket. You don’t need to ask your landlord’s permission to drill into a roof—just clamp the panel to a balcony railing or a fence post. Revolutionary for anyone who’s tired of paying a premium for a flat that faces north-east and smells like damp socks.
