Watch them read aloud. Does it sound like they’re decoding a secret alien language? Lots of stopping, starting, and guessing. They might read “house” as “horse” and then argue with you about it. (I’m not joking.)
They’re exhausted after reading just one page. It’s not laziness. Their brain is running a marathon while other kids are taking a stroll. If they avoid reading like it’s a chore from a villain, pay attention.
And the speed? Oh, the speed. They read like a snail on sedatives. Meanwhile, you’re mentally screaming, “JUST GET TO THE END OF THE SENTENCE!”
