Let’s be fair. He is good in a crisis. If my car breaks down at 2 a.m., he’d be there in 20 minutes, grumbling about “kids these days.” He still slips me a fifty-dollar bill on my birthday, which I secretly love and pretend to hate. He has a weird, adorable loyalty to his favorite coffee mug that’s been chipped for a decade.

But the older I get, the more I see the cost of that loyalty. His loyalty to his own stubbornness. His refusal to ask for directions, literally or emotionally. He once drove forty minutes out of the way because he wouldn’t pull over and use Google Maps. That’s my dad in a nutshell: wrong, but damn sure he’s right.

I think about the things he didn’t teach me. How to apologize. How to talk about feelings without turning it into a lecture. How to be vulnerable. He taught me how to change a tire, sure, but not how to say, “I’m scared.” And you know what? I’m pissed about that.

The Awkward Middle Ground

So where does that leave us? We have this weird, polite tension. We talk about the weather, sports, and the price of gas. We never talk about us. It’s like two diplomats from neighboring countries who share a border but no language.

I don’t hate him. I just… dislike him in a way that’s hard to explain. It’s a disappointment that has settled into my bones, like a low-grade fever. I look at him and see a man who had every opportunity to grow, and he chose to stay the same. And that’s his choice, but it feels like a betrayal.

Maybe that’s what growing up really is: realizing your parents aren’t villains, but they’re not heroes either. They’re just people. Flawed, frustrating, weird people who did their best (or didn’t) and left you with a mess of mixed feelings. And the older I get, the more I realize I can love him and still dislike him at the same time.

It’s a weird place to be. But hey, at least the coffee’s cold and the conversation is awkward. Just like old times, right? Right. Now pass the sugar—I need something sweet to wash down this bitter realization.
