Let’s start with the classic: a 50cc moped. You can blast around on one of these after passing your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). It’s basically a one-day course where you learn not to fall off and not to annoy the neighbours.
Think of it as a bicycle that’s had six Red Bulls. Top speed is around 30mph, which feels like lightning when you’re flying down a country lane. You’ll save a fortune on petrol, too – a full tank costs less than a meal deal at Tesco.
Popular choices include the Yamaha Aerox and the Piaggio Zip. They’re zippy, easy to park, and you can customise them with stickers that say “I’m not lost, I’m exploring.” My personal favourite? The Honda Vision. It’s so reliable it feels like a robotic pet.
But Wait – What About a Microcar?
If the thought of two wheels makes you wobble, you can go for a light quadricycle. These are tiny cars with four wheels, but they’re not allowed to go faster than 45km/h (about 28mph). Yes, a pushchair can almost overtake you on a hill.
The most famous one is the Renault Twizy. It looks like a futuristic egg on wheels. You sit in a bubble, and the doors swing up like a spaceship. It has no windows, so you’ll be “intimate” with the weather, but you’ll feel like a rockstar. Just don’t try to carry any shopping – the “boot” is basically a glovebox.

Another option is the Citroën Ami, which is basically a French toaster with headlights. It’s cheap, slow, and so cute that people will smile at you. And at 16, that’s all you need – no one’s impressed by your horsepower, only your ability to parallel park without hitting a granny.
