Played by the brilliant Lennard Pearce, Grandad wasn’t really a grandad at all, he was their great-uncle. But let’s be honest, “Grandad” just rolls off the tongue better, doesn’t it?
His full name was Edward Kitchener Trotter, and he was the heart of the Trotters’ chaotic world. While Del was scheming and Rodney was moaning, Grandad was usually just trying to find his teeth or remember what he went upstairs for.
The Master of the Mumbled One-Liner
Grandad’s comedy was effortless. He could make a simple statement like “I don’t believe it!” sound like a Shakespearean tragedy, if Shakespeare wrote about dodgy hooky gear and flatulence. His timing was so perfect that a single raised eyebrow could have you crying with laughter.
Remember when he tried to give Rodney advice about women? “Never trust a woman who’s got a smaller handbag than you.” Pure gold, and absolutely useless. That was Grandad: full of wisdom that only made sense in his own special way.
