Dr. Seuss himself never gave Max a specific breed in the original 1957 book. The illustrations show a scruffy, smallish dog with a remarkably long tail. He’s basically a Seussian original—a breed found only in Whoville.
That’s actually the coolest part. Max doesn’t need to be a "Labrador" or a "Poodle" to be memorable. He’s simply Max. He represents every loyal, slightly grumpy-looking dog who loves you even when you’re being a Grinch.
It’s a reminder that our pets don’t need labels to be special. A good dog is a good dog, no matter what the DNA test says.
