So, What’s a Brit to Do?
Don’t panic, but do take basic precautions. If you’re going out at dusk, slap on some repellent (DEET works, but so does a good old fan—they’re terrible fliers). Keep your windows screened, or at least close them if you’re leaving a light on.

And if you get bitten, just scratch it (we all do) and then immediately regret it. A cold spoon, calamine lotion, or a dab of toothpaste works wonders. I swear by ice cubes and a stern talk to myself about not being a martyr.
