Let’s be real for a moment. We don’t get white Christmases like our grandparents did. The world is getting warmer, and that perfect snow on the 25th is becoming a rare beast. It’s like trying to find a Woolworths pick-and-mix—it’s just not the same anymore.
But here’s the good news: we are obsessed with it. Every December, the news teases us with “Arctic blasts” and “snow bomb warnings.” We buy those Christmas cards with snowy cottages anyway, knowing full well our own garden is just mud and fallen leaves. We are a nation of dreamers.
And that dreaming is important. It connects us. You, me, and the guy down the street all look up at the same grey sky and whisper, “Please, just this once.” It’s the last bit of collective childhood we have left.

If you haven’t had a white Christmas in a decade, don’t despair. You can still fake it. I put fake snow spray on my windows every year until my cat licks it off. It looks terrible, but it makes me giggle. You can also binge-watch wintery vlogs on YouTube.
Or, do what my friend Sarah does: she turns all the lights off except the Christmas tree, plays “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby, and stares out the window at the rain. She calls it “visualising.” I call it living in denial, but it works! The trick is to let the spirit of the memory warm you.
So, when was the last white Christmas? For most of us, it was 2010. For a lucky few in the Scottish Highlands, it was last year. And for the rest of us, it’s a question that sparks a lovely, warm argument over a second helping of turkey.
The real answer, my friend, is that the last one doesn’t matter as much as the next one. And every year, we get to hope for it. That hope is the gift. Now, go find a woolly jumper and pretend the central heating is a roaring fire. You earned it.
