Let’s not forget the real reason we send kids to school: friends. South East London schools are wonderfully diverse, mixing kids from different backgrounds. Your child will learn more about life in the dinner hall than in any textbook.
After-school clubs are a big deal here too. From robotics to street dance, there’s something for every weird and wonderful hobby. My friend’s son joined a Japanese drumming club at his school in Deptford. Now he’s basically a drumming samurai. Cool, right?
And the uniform situation? Some schools are strict (blazer, tie, trousers of shame), others are more relaxed. Just be prepared to lose a tie within the first week. It’s a rite of passage.
Special Schools and Alternative Provision
It’s worth noting that South East London has some excellent special schools too. Schools like Brent Knoll in Lewisham and Greenvale in the borough do incredible work with students who need extra support. They deserve a massive shout-out.

For kids who don’t fit the traditional mould, there are also alternative provisions and pupil referral units. These places often turn lives around. They’re quietly heroic, and we don’t talk about them enough.
If your child needs this kind of support, the local councils have good teams. Don’t be shy—ask for help. It’s there.
