Coniston has several small beaches, but the best is near the Coniston Boating Centre. It’s a mix of grass and shingle, with easy access to the water.
You can rent a rowboat or just dip your toes in. The water is usually calm, so it’s great for a gentle paddle. If you squint, you can pretend you’re Beatrix Potter—if she wore a swimsuit and forgot her bonnet.
Hodge Close – The Drama Queen
This is a flooded quarry, not a lake. And it’s very dramatic. The beach is a small, rocky ledge surrounded by sheer slate cliffs. Divers love this place because the water is deep and eerily clear.
Fair warning: it’s not for sunbathing. It’s for “wow, this looks like a Bond villain’s lair” energy. Bring a torch and a sense of adventure. Leave the picnic basket in the car.
